Storm Leaves Several Injured and Homes Damaged in Moses Kotane

Several people were injured and scores of houses damaged after a heavy storm battered parts of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality on Sunday, 04 January 2026.

The affected areas include Mahobieskraal and Manamakgoteng, where strong winds and heavy rain caused widespread destruction. In Mahobieskraal, one house belonging to a pensioner was completely destroyed, leaving the occupant homeless. Community members have since appealed for urgent assistance for the affected families.

Local resident Tshiamo Mediwane said the situation on the ground was dire and called for immediate intervention. “Families have lost their homes and belongings. They need urgent help, especially the elderly and those who were injured,” Mediwane said.
In a media statement, the Moses Kotane Local Municipality confirmed the incident, stating that its Disaster Management Unit responded swiftly following reports of the storm damage.

“Municipal disaster response teams have been dispatched and are currently conducting assessments in the affected areas,” the statement read. The municipality added that preliminary reports had identified Mahobieskraal and Manamakgoteng as the worst-hit villages so far.

The municipality also indicated that it expects to receive additional reports as assessments continue. “All verified cases and assessed damages will be formally recorded and referred to relevant sector departments for further intervention and assistance, in line with established disaster management protocols,” the statement said.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with assessment teams on the ground to ensure that all affected households are properly documented. The municipality said it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Community members who need to report disaster-related incidents or require further information have been advised to contact Ms Masego Mokotedi at 078 458 1020.
