In a surprising turn of events, a suspected undocumented foreign driver abandoned his bus and fled on foot after being stopped by North West traffic officers on R 101 near Carousel. The incident unfolded during a routine stop and search operation by the vigilant officers.
The bus, bearing Zimbabwean registration, was en route to Johannesburg with 78 passengers on board. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver swiftly exited and escaped on foot, leaving both the officers and passengers bewildered by his sudden disappearance.

Quick to respond, the traffic officers contacted the local police, who took charge of the situation. The passengers were subsequently taken to the Makapanstad Police Station for verification of their status, while the bus was impounded.
The Department MEC, Sello Lehari, commended the law enforcement officers for their exceptional work. He stated, “This is a further testimony that our operations and monitoring mechanisms on our roads are impactful. We had been on all roads – both interconnecting and rural, to ensure that there is compliance with the law.”
Citizens have praised the efficiency and presence of law enforcement, with Johannesburg resident Mr. Lorenzo Roberts expressing gratitude on social media. Stranded on his way back from a family outing in Sun City, he was assisted by the friendly law enforcement officers.

“Ordinary people must feel safe in the presence of law enforcement officers. They should not be petrified. And we are happy when citizens give us this type of feedback,” added MEC Lehari.
The continuous presence of traffic officers has contributed to a notable reduction in fatalities on North West roads, standing at just below 90. This marks a 10% decrease compared to the same period last year. However, with schools reopening next week, an increase in traffic is anticipated over the weekend. Law enforcement encourages vigilance to maintain road safety standards.
