Obakeng Mongale, the Head of the Department of Health, returned to his duties today – Monday, January 8, 2024, after being placed on special leave in late October 2023. This action was taken following his court appearance related to matters stemming from his previous role as the Head of the Department of Public Works.
Initially prescribed for sixty days, the special leave could be extended under exceptional circumstances. However, Premier Kaobitsa Bushy Maape, after extensive consultation and legal advice, has determined that there are no valid legal reasons to extend Mongale’s special leave.

Consequently, Mongale will resume his responsibilities effective from January 8, 2024. Premier Maape expressed gratitude to Dr. Mmadipuo Tlhogane, who acted as Superintendent General and Head of Department during Mongale’s absence, for maintaining focus on the department’s service delivery mandate. Additionally, he acknowledged MEC Madoda Sambatha for his leadership during this unprecedented development.
To ensure a seamless transition, all necessary arrangements have been made as the substantive Superintendent General resumes duties. The office of the Premier said in a statement – it will continue to monitor the department’s situation and promptly inform the public of any further decisions arising from new developments.

“Despite Mongale’s return, the office of the Premier remains committed to scrutinizing all documentation and reports linked to the case he is facing. Reassuring the public, the office has obtained sufficient information and emphasized there is no risk of interference with the legal proceedings. Once the assessment concludes, the Premier will consider any additional recommendations regarding the future of Mongale and inform the public accordingly,” read the statement.
