A coordinated police operation and swift response from the community resulted in the arrest of a hijacking suspect within minutes of the crime being committed.

Police officers conducting Safer City Operation duties in the Rustenburg Central Business District (CBD) at around 09:00 on Friday received a lookout alert for a stolen white Toyota Dyna truck. The vehicle had been hijacked from a second-hand car dealership in Kroondal by an unknown suspect, with initial reports indicating that it was headed toward Rustenburg town.

The dealership owner, who was tracking the stolen truck, informed authorities that he was following the vehicle on the R24 road towards Magaliesburg. With the assistance of both the police and local farmers, the truck was intercepted near Maanhaarand.
A 42-year-old Zimbabwean national, who is legally in the country, was found in possession of the stolen vehicle. He was questioned and subsequently arrested after failing to provide a valid explanation for having the truck.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of theft and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
Welcoming the successful arrest, North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, the vehicle owner, and local community members. “This swift response highlights the importance of teamwork in combating crime and ensuring justice,” he stated.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police as they intensify efforts to make the province safer.
