Tragic Accident Involving Learner Transport Vehicle Leaves Community Reeling

Viola Motsumi, the MEC for Education in the North West province, has expressed profound sadness following a devastating accident involving a learner transport vehicle on Tuesday, 06 February 2024.

The incident occurred as the transport, carrying 51 students from Gaetsho and J.M. Lekhetha schools, veered off the road, resulting in 23 learners requiring hospital treatment. Among the injured, 19 students were from Gaetsho Secondary School, while 4 were from J.M. Lekhetha High School.

As of today, Wednesday, 07 February 2024, only one learner from Gaetsho Secondary remains under medical supervision at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital in Mafikeng, with a few others receiving care at General Delarey Hospital in Lichtenburg.

“We are committed to providing the necessary medical care and counseling services to all those involved. We urge the school community to remain united and supportive during this difficult time,” expressed Motsumi.

Safety and well-being remain paramount, with Motsumi emphasizing the department’s collaboration with relevant authorities to investigate the accident’s cause and implement preventive measures for the future.

The Department will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.

Motsumi also extended her gratitude to the Department of Health for their swift response and support during this challenging time.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety in learner transportation and the need for continuous vigilance to prevent such accidents from occurring again in the future.
