The Rustenburg Local Municipality has condemned the ongoing vandalism of its electrical infrastructure following the arrest of two white suspects believed to be behind a series of incidents targeting the city’s electricity network — particularly in Protea Park, Safari Tuine, and the Rustenburg CBD.
Executive Mayor, Shiela Mabale-Huma, expressed deep concern over the persistent attacks, describing them as a “relentless onslaught” that continues to leave communities vulnerable and exposed.
“The city has recently noted that in just a few months, it has spent millions to repair vandalised electrical infrastructure. Beyond the staggering financial losses, the consequences of vandalism reverberate deeply in the daily lives of citizens,” said Mabale-Huma.
The Executive Mayor highlighted that the frequent acts of sabotage have led to power outages, water cuts, disrupted transportation, communication blackouts, and reduced access to essential services — all of which erode residents’ quality of life and sense of security.
A criminal case has been opened at the Rustenburg Police Station, and investigations are continuing. The municipality has commended private security companies and the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) for their swift response and collaboration in ensuring the suspects’ arrest.
“Let’s safeguard the city’s infrastructure to ensure reliable and uninterrupted services,” added Mabale-Huma, calling on all residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity around municipal facilities.
The municipality reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on infrastructure vandalism and urged communities to work together with law enforcement to protect public assets vital for service delivery.
