A viral video showing a traffic officer being attacked has sparked public concern after an incident linked to an alleged armed robbery on the R503 road between Klerksdorp and Hartbeesfontein. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday afternoon, 15 December 2025.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the confrontation followed an alleged armed robbery that had taken place shortly before the video was recorded. Two male suspects, aged 44 and 26, who are accused of committing the robbery, were apprehended by members of the public. A traffic officer who was on routine patrol was stopped by community members while the suspects were being pursued.
According to police, the suspects ran for cover inside the traffic officer’s vehicle. Members of the public who were chasing them allegedly attacked the suspects inside the traffic vehicle, during which the traffic officer was also assaulted. The officer immediately alerted the South African Police Service, who responded swiftly to the scene. The community members involved reportedly fled upon the arrival of the police.
The two suspects sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital under police guard, where they remain under medical treatment. A firearm with ammunition, believed to have been used in the commission of the alleged armed robbery, was handed over to the traffic officer and has since been seized as part of the investigation.
Police confirmed that the suspects remain in custody and will appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court once they are discharged from hospital. They face charges of armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm with ammunition. In addition, the 26-year-old suspect will also be charged with contravening Section 49 of the Immigration Act, Act 13 of 2002.
The police are investigating the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the events captured in the viral video. Further action will be taken once investigations are finalised.
The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, together with the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, have urged members of the public to allow law enforcement to conduct investigations without interference and to refrain from circulating unverified information. The authorities have strongly condemned acts of violence and vigilantism, emphasising that while community cooperation in reporting crime is encouraged, the apprehension and punishment of suspects remain the responsibility of law enforcement and the justice system.
