Residents in Rustenburg and surrounding areas are facing water supply disruptions following a significant reduction in the Magalies Water supply from the Vaalkop Scheme. The disruption stems from a raw water pump failure encountered on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at the Vaalkop Water Treatment Plant.
The affected area includes communities serviced by the Bospoort and Kortbegrip Reservoirs, with Plant 3, connected to an integrated network, experiencing a production rate reduction of 45ML/day.

According to the statement from the Rustenburg Local Municipality this morning, Magalies Water has dispatched the pump for assessment and repairs; however, no timeline for restoration has been provided as of yet.
The impacted areas include:
- Bospoort System: Greater Boitekong, Sondela, Lusikisiki, Sunrise Park, Sunrise View, Freedom Park, Ramochana, Paardekraal, Meriting Extensions, Seraleng, Lekgalong, Ikageng, Rustenburg North, Zinniaville, Karlien Park, Tlhabane, Tlhabane West, Geelhout Park, and the Industrial Area.
- Kortbegrip System: Lethabong, Modikwe, Bethanie, and Bareseba.
Currently, the Bospoort Reservoir stands at a mere 20% capacity, with an inflow rate of 1 ML/hr. To ensure adequate water distribution, all outlets from the Bospoort Reservoir will remain closed until the reservoir reaches at least 80% capacity.
Residents are urged to conserve water and make necessary arrangements until normal supply is restored. Authorities are working diligently to rectify the situation, and updates will be provided as the situation progresses.
