The tight-knit community of Photsaneng, outside Rustenburg, is in mourning and disbelief following the tragic death of their ward councillor, Poppy Maria Morapedi. The 54-year-old Rustenburg Local Municipality Councillor was fatally shot by unknown gunmen on Friday evening, April 26, 2024.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice as police in Rustenburg have launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators.
According to initial reports, Morapedi and her cousin were returning home from a nearby shop when they were followed by a group of four unidentified men. As they approached the gate of their residence, one of the assailants allegedly approached them and fired two shots, fatally wounding Morapedi. Her cousin managed to escape into the yard and raised the alarm.

Morapedi’s brother rushed out of the house and witnessed the suspects fleeing the scene, ultimately escaping in a BMW vehicle.
Emergency and Medical Services (EMS) declared Morapedi dead at the scene, having sustained gunshot wounds below the left ear and forehead.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made yet.
