CHANENG MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPING HIS DAUGHTER

A 66-year-old man from Chaneng village near Phokeng has been sentenced to 20 years of direct imprisonment by the Bafokeng Regional Court for raping his biological daughter.

The court handed down the sentence on Thursday, 25 September 2025, after finding the father guilty of the crime committed in November 2022. During the incident, the man threatened his then 18-year-old daughter with a knife before raping her.

Although the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed the act was consensual, his defence was rejected after the survivor gave powerful testimony, supported by DNA evidence, which proved his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

In its ruling, the court emphasised the gravity of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), especially when the perpetrator is a parent who should be a protector. The man was further declared unfit to own a firearm under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).

Welcoming the outcome, Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Dintletse Molefe said the sentence delivered a strong message to perpetrators of GBV. She praised the diligent work of Detective Sergeant Joyce Seake, Prosecutor Advocate Zola Mpayipheli, and all role players who worked on the case.

Director of Public Prosecutions Dr Rachel Makhari also commended the team, saying their collaborative effort ensured justice for the survivor and reaffirmed the justice system’s commitment to protecting the vulnerable.
