Three Shops Closed in Brits for Non-Compliance, 18 Illegal Immigrants Arrested

In a joint operation conducted by the Madibeng Local Municipality, Bojanala District Municipality, the Department of Home Affairs, and the South African Police Services, three shops in Brits and Oukasie were shut down for non-compliance, and 18 illegal immigrants were arrested.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday, targeted businesses in the area selling expired goods and failing to meet legal standards. Authorities confiscated and destroyed tons of expired food items, including those lacking manufacturer information.

Douglas Maimane, the Executive Mayor of the Madibeng Local Municipality, praised the multi-departmental team for their efforts, highlighting the growing issue of expired food being sold to the public across the country.

“The health of our people comes first, and we will continue with operations of this nature without fear or favour,” said Maimane. “We appeal to our people to help us in this fight by always checking things like the expiry dates on foods to avoid cases of sicknesses and deaths.”

The Executive Mayor also emphasized that the crackdown on non-compliant businesses is part of the government’s commitment to protecting the health and safety of residents. Similar operations are expected to continue across the region.
