Watloo Meat and Chicken Butchery, located next to the Rustenburg taxi rank, was forced to close its doors on Wednesday after Rustenburg Local Municipality law enforcement officials cut off its electricity supply due to an unpaid municipal bill nearing R900 000.

The Directorate: Budget & Treasury, through its Revenue Protection Team (RPT), is intensifying efforts to recover outstanding municipal debts under the City At Work campaign. On Wednesday, 16 July 2025, the RPT returned to the butchery on Bethlehem Street following a previous engagement with the business regarding its long-outstanding account.

During their initial visit, the butchery’s management was informed of the arrears and advised to visit the Municipality to resolve the matter after they claimed to have a dispute on their account. However, despite being given time to respond, the business made no effort to engage or settle the debt.

When the RPT team returned to the premises this week, they were met with hostility and uncooperative behaviour from the managers. With support from Municipal Manager Adv. Ashmar Khuduge and intervention by Rustenburg Law Enforcement, officials proceeded to disconnect electricity and seal the electrical box, in line with municipal by-laws and revenue protection policies.
Adv. Khuduge urged all businesses and residents with overdue accounts to proactively engage with its Budget & Treasury Directorate to avoid enforcement action. “The Municipality stated that revenue recovery remains critical to sustaining essential services and maintaining infrastructure throughout the city,” said Khuduge.
