Rustenburg’s City at Work campaign continued this week in Kanana, showcasing the Municipality’s hands-on approach to improving community safety, enforcing by-laws, and enhancing service delivery across the city.
Led by the Executive Mayor, hiela Mabale-Huma, the multidisciplinary campaign brought together various Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) and municipal officials to address key service delivery priorities, including business compliance, safety, and infrastructure maintenance.
The Municipal Manager, Adv. Ashmar Khuduge, and the MMC for Local Economic Development, Thabang Rampou, led inspection teams that visited local shops and tuckshops to assess compliance with municipal by-laws. The teams checked for expired goods, valid business documentation, and adherence to fire safety regulations.
Several businesses were found in violation of by-laws — with some selling expired goods, operating without licenses, or using trading spaces for residential purposes. Others were found with non-functional fire extinguishers, posing serious safety risks. Fines were issued to non-compliant businesses.
Cllr Rampou emphasized the importance of responsible business practices, noting that compliance protects both consumers and traders.
“We are not here to shut businesses down, but to ensure that all operate within the law. A compliant business environment builds community trust and attracts investment,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MMC for Infrastructure and Technical Services, Karabo Phutu oversaw the Electrical Unit’s operations in Ward 23, where teams carried out maintenance and repairs on high-mast lights at Stand No. 910, Old Clinic Section at Stand No. 864B, and Stand No. 1098. The work aims to enhance safety and improve visibility for residents during evening hours.
Executive Mayor Mabale-Huma commended the teams for their dedication and stressed that the City at Work campaign is about accountability and visible governance.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring Rustenburg remains a city that works for its people — where safety, service delivery, and compliance are top priorities,” she said.
The Rustenburg Local Municipality reaffirmed its call for all businesses and residents to cooperate with municipal regulations and take collective responsibility for maintaining clean, safe, and compliant communities.
