South Africa Mourns Presley “Cobrizi wa le Easy” Chweneyagae at Mahikeng Memorial

South African actor Israel Matseke Zulu delivered a stirring tribute to the late Presley “Cobrizi wa le Easy” Chweneyagae at a memorial service held today at the Mmabatho Convention Centre, urging the nation to better honour its artists while they are still alive.

Zulu, known for his roles in local drama and film, lamented the lack of recognition South African actors receive at home despite earning accolades abroad. “South African artists win big internationally, yet they receive little recognition here at home,” he said, referencing Chweneyagae’s Oscar-winning performance in Tsotsi, which brought global acclaim to the country’s film industry.

The memorial service, organised by the North West Provincial Government in partnership with the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR) and the Mmabana Foundation, drew a large crowd of family, friends, dignitaries, and fans. The event marked a poignant farewell to one of Mahikeng’s most celebrated talents.

Acting Premier of the North West Province, Kenetswe Mosenogi, also addressed mourners, describing Chweneyagae’s death as a profound loss to the entertainment industry. “We have lost a star,” Mosenogi said. “His talent, his humility, and his spirit made a lasting impact not only in the arts sector but in the hearts of many.”

Chweneyagae, affectionately known as “Tobetsa” among those closest to him, was remembered as a humble, dedicated artist whose legacy will live on through his body of work and community influence. Speaker after speaker praised his authenticity and passion for storytelling, which resonated with audiences across South Africa and beyond.

A second memorial service is set to take place in Gauteng at the Pretoria State Theatre on Thursday, June 5th, at 11:00.

His final resting place will be in Zandfontein. Funeral details are as follows:
Date: Saturday, June 7th
Venue: Akasia Community Hall
Time: 08:00
